Colombia's Finance Minister Quits After Tax Reform Plan Withdrawn

Colombia s finance minister has resigned from his post after deadly mass protests erupted across the country over a tax reform proposal.
Finance Minister Alberto Carrasquilla s resignation comes a day after President Ivan Duque announced that the proposed tax reform would be put to shelves due to the opposition it received.
It can be recalled that thousands of protesters in Colombia gathered on the streets and demonstrated against the proposed tax reform after it was announced last Wednesday.
Ivan Duque announced he was withdrawing the tax reform proposal on the television on Sunday. Demonstrators, lawmakers, and other groups opposing the plan welcomed the announcement as a victory. ....

Colombian currency plunges on finance minister resignation report


Colombia’s peso fell the most among major currencies as local media reported Finance Minister Alberto Carrasquilla is about to step down after bloody street protests led the government to shelve his plan to raise taxes.
Carrasquilla and his deputy Juan Alberto Londono will hand in their resignations this morning, Blu Radio reported, without saying how it obtained the information. La Republica daily said the whole economic team who worked on the tax bill will also quit.
Colombian media have reported that finance minister Alberto Carrasquilla plans to step down after bloody street protests led the government to shelve his plan to raise taxes  [File: Bloomberg]While declining to comment on the reports, Interior Minister Daniel Palacios told Blu Radio that the government will seek to reach consensus with political parties to present a new tax bill to congress. Students and workers in Colombia have taken the streets this week to protest against a tax reform proposal by President Ivan Duque’s government.
The proposed tax reform, according to Reuters, “would increase taxes on individuals and businesses and eliminate many exemptions, and was originally meant to raise about $6 billion, equivalent to 2% of gross domestic product (GDP).” The government also suggested expanding items subject to value-added tax.
As a result, peaceful demonstrations took place around the country, especially in Bogotá, Cali, and Medellín. They eventually turned violent, with many police and civilians were injured, and others arrested for alleged vandalism. ....

Protests Erupt in Colombia Over Proposed Tax Reform Amid Pandemic


Thousands of protesters in Colombia gathered on the streets and demonstrated against a proposed tax reform that was announced on Wednesday.
The proposed measure of the Colombian government is intended to raise some $6.3 billion in 10 years for the country, AFP reported. The country saw a 6.8 percent drop in the gross domestic product (GDP) last year. It was reportedly the worst performance in half a century.
Colombians were not happy about the government s plan and decided to gather and protest against the proposed tax reform. Several cities have reported disturbances and acts of vandalism during the day of the strike, according to Andalou Agency. ....
