BRIGADIER Charles Barker MBE MC served with the Gordon Highlanders in France, North Africa, Sicily, Belgium, Holland, Germany, and Malaya. he also held several exacting staff posts. His MC was awarded for his eight months as Brigade Major for 152 Infantry Brigade in north-West Europe during 1944-45. His citation recorded his cheerfulness, resource, and determination had been most marked and in the heat of the battle he had remained unruffled. The citation noted that on several occasions Brigade HQ was shelled and mortared and his readiness maturely to take decisions in the absence of his commander affected the success of several operations. ....

SIR – What a wonderfully human person the Duke of Edinburgh was.
In the 1960s, when I was a resident in the Royal Infirmary, Edinburgh, the doctor’s mess was ill decorated. A doctor suggested that the only way to get it redecorated was to invite royalty to visit.
We sent a letter inviting the Duke to dine in the doctor s mess. To our astonishment we received a reply saying that he would be delighted to accept the invitation on the next occasion that he was in Edinburgh.
We kept the date secret but word got out during the week of the visit. A host of workmen descended and very rapidly redecorated and transformed the mess. ....

I have been searching for old comrades from the British Army, and I recently found the following article:
A soldier has been honoured for exceptional service to the army for more than 40 years. Gordon Hardaker, 61, of Holyoak Avenue, Bingley, was awarded the Lord Lieutenant High Honour - which ranks immediately below an MBE - in recognition of years of dedicated service to the Territorial Army.
Staff Sergeant Hardaker left Bradford to join the army on a Junior Leader Course in Newton Abbot when he was just 15. He served in the regular army for 25 years, spending a number of years in Germany, and has been on the permanent staff of the 34 Royal Signals Territorial Army in Carlton Barracks, Leeds, for the last 34 years. He said: Being in the army is a way of life more that a job and I have enjoyed it immensely . ....
