Nine members of the Canyon Crest Academy Junior Optimist International (JOI) Club got the opportunity to return to the San Diego Food Bank April 23 for a group volunteer shift. Safety protocols in the spacious warehouse enabled the volunteer group to work in a socially-distanced but closely connected environment. The CCA JOI Club’s evening task involved sorting and bagging fresh fruit and vegetables, specifically apples, oranges, onions, and potatoes. In total, the shift prepared 5,900 pounds of produce bags for distribution within the community. ....

Optimist Club announces winners of Essay Scholarship Contest

A panel of three judges evaluated the local students’ essays using strict Optimist International rules to determine the winners. First, second, and third place winners will present their papers at a club meeting after COVID-19 pandemic-related restrictions allow.
First place went to Sydney Mafong, a student at Pacific Trails Middle School. Sydney was awarded a check for $250, gold medallion, and certificate. Her essay advanced to the District contest for a chance at even greater prizes including a college scholarship.

Being connected is important. Being part of a community is particularly comforting, especially so during a pandemic. The newly formed Pacific Trails Middle School Junior Optimist Club offers its members the opportunity for both. Living up to their name, several members of the club recently performed valuable community service while safely sharing some time together and developing camaraderie. The Junior Optimists safely cleaned up the Elizabeth Rabbitt Neighborhood Park and the Del Mar Mesa Preserve Trail. Junior Optimists continue to focus on finding ways to safely help the environment even during these challenging times. ....
