bcox@lewistownsentinel.com LEWISTOWN More than $419,000 in relief money for hospitality businesses whose bottom lines in 2020 were negatively affected by the COVID-19 pandemic is available now in Mifflin County and the Mifflin County Commissioners urged businesses to apply as soon as possible. The program administered by SEDA-Council of Governments, called the COVID-19 Hospitality Industry Recovery Program, or CHIRP, awards grants ranging from $5,000 to $50,000 to businesses in the hospitality industry such as hotels and restaurants that suffered losses in 2020 due to the pandemic. Mifflin County Planning Director Mark Colussy spoke during Thursday morning’s regular meeting of the commissioners and reported that while some businesses have applied and been approved, there’s still lots more help available. ....
Chamber of commerce seeking donations Apr 14, 2021 LEWISTOWN Fundraising has begun for the 2021 Independence Day Fireworks Display, and this year the Juniata River Valley Chamber of Commerce is seeking donations from the community at large. The event, which was canceled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, is slated for July 3 with a rain date of July 10. The display is scheduled to begin at 9:30 p.m. and last a half-hour. The fireworks will be launched from the field adjacent to the Mifflin County Industrial Development Plaza and will be viewable from many locations around the Lewistown area. The cost for this year’s show is $15,750. ....
Apr 10, 2021 DANVILLE – Geisinger partnered with eight local chambers of commerce to launch Meals in Spring and give back to the restaurants in the community hit hard by the pandemic. As part of the program, more than 23,000 Geisinger employees can redeem a $10 meal voucher at any of nearly 300 participating restaurants across 12 counties through June 30. “Our local chambers of commerce were among the first organizations that came to us during the early days of the pandemic offering help,” said John Grabusky, senior director of community relations. “They collected N95 masks and gloves, organized sewing groups for homemade masks and they were behind many donations of pizzas, sandwiches, coffees and snacks that started to flow into our facilities. Now, it’s our turn to help them by supporting our local restaurants with Meals in Spring.” ....
