Jefferson County Teachers Protest A Planned Return To School, Citing Safety Worries

Teachers in the Jefferson County School District said Wednesday that they are concerned about the district’s plan to educate elementary students in-person. The district plans to begin returning students to school buildings on Jan. 19 and will resume remote learning only if the district moves to the most severe level on Colorado’s COVID-19 dial framework. 
“School health and safety is community health and safety,” said Brooke Williams, president of the Jefferson County Education Association, the Jeffco Schools teachers union. “Schools do not operate in a bubble.” Williams led a protest of several dozen teachers outside Jefferson County School District headquarters Wednesd ....

 On a cool Wednesday afternoon in December, community members gathered for a press conference to plead for an audience with Interim Superintendent Kristopher Schuh regarding the food crisis Jefferson County students and families are facing in the wake of COVID-19, and a shift to online learning.
Pastor Reagan Humber, a member of House for All Sinners and Saints and Colorado for the Common Good, led the conference and was joined by representatives from Jefferson County Education Support Professionals Association, Jefferson County Education Association, B’nai Havurah Synagogue, Taking Neighborhood Health to Heart, Co-Op at 1st and Jovial Concepts, Go Farm Golden, BGOLDN, Arvadans for Social Justice, Triad Early Childhood Council, Jefferson County Food Policy Council, Lakewood United Church of Christ, and Jefferson County Poor People’s Campaign. JeffCo families call for return to in-person learning

Students and families held a car rally outside JeffCo Public Schools Wednesday night. They want to return to in-person learning at the start of the second semester in January.
Families are struggling, Datko said, and believe remote learning is not the answer.
“It’s been really hard online,” said Teagan Eisenring, a sophomore at Conifer High School. “We’re just not having that connection with our teachers and our fellow peers that we would really like to have.”
Teagan’s little sister, Kiley, is in fourth grade.
“At home, I get distracted a bunch,” she said. “If I [have] questions, I need to wait for a specific time. We don’t get to work with other classmates and, [we] do it ourselves and that’s hard. And a lot of the parents, they don’t know what we’re learning. It’s a struggle for me because no one can really help me.” ....
