'Watershed Wednesday Webinars' to be presented | Community Notes


WATERTOWN — The Tug Hill Commission and its partners at the Lewis, Jefferson, Hamilton, Herkimer and Oneida County Soil and Water Conservation Districts and the state Department of Environmental Conservation Region 6 will present “Watershed Wednesday Webinars” in May and June, as the in-person Black River Watershed Conference has been postponed again this year.
All webinars are free, presented via Zoom and require preregistration. This information is also available on the commission’s website at tughill.org/black-river-watershed-wednesdays-2021.

Blotter: Jefferson County police activity for Monday, May 17


WATERTOWN — Markesha L.B. Clark, 21, of 309 Mill St., Apt. 506, was charged by city police Monday with first-degree reckless endangerment.
According to police records, at about 1:48 a.m. Monday, Ms. Clark drove her 2010 Ford Focus at Alisa Riney, who was on the sidewalk along the 400 block of Mill Street. Ms. Clark struck Ms. Riney, who was injured and put at risk of death after the incident.
Ms. Clark was arrested, taken to the Metro-Jefferson Public Safety Building and held pending an arraignment hearing.
Dominic A. Rima, 41, of 32749 Elmridge Road, Philadelphia, was charged by city police Sunday with petit larceny and second-degree criminal trespass. ....

State police identify victim of fatal town of Stockholm fire


STOCKHOLM — State police have identified a man who died in a fire Saturday on Brookdale Road as Paul C. Sieradski.
State police said they and the Norfolk Police Department responded at about 7:40 p.m. Saturday to a report of a fire with a person possibly trapped inside at 21 Brookdale Road in the town of Stockholm.
A trooper and a Norfolk police officer attempted to enter the structure but were unable due to the intense heat and smoke, according to state police.
Once the fire was extinguished by the Brasher-Winthrop Fire Department, firefighters located Mr. Sieradski, 68, dead inside the residence. An autopsy is scheduled for today. ....

Help wanted: Local employers say enhanced unemployment benefits make it tough to fill jobs


WATERTOWN — Unemployment benefits in the state seem like an unspoken elephant in the room that business owners say has contributed heavily to a dip in employees.
“Help Wanted” signs have been peppering the fronts of businesses across the north country in recent weeks, which is the result of not only the summer season approaching.
While economic experts point to a number of factors — issues with childcare, for example — as the driver of it all, they believe some business owners in the north country, that unemployed people are riding out their enhanced benefits by finding loopholes during the pandemic.
Congress had approved an additional $600 a week from March 2020 through the end of the year. Regular benefits are capped with an additional $300 a week until September. It’s enough to limit incentive and undercut motivation, according to these business owners. ....

Walmart lifts mask mandate for vaccinated customers nationwide, but it doesn't apply locally | Public Service News


WATERTOWN — Walmart and Costco may have taken the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidance and is now allowing vaccinated customers to shop in their stores without wearing masks, but likely nothing will change locally.
The president and chief executive officer of Walmart, John Furner, issued a memo to employees Friday writing that vaccinated customers won’t have to wear masks in Walmart or Costco, effective immediately. That goes for vaccinated employees, too, starting Tuesday.
But Walmart is following guidance from the CDC. Walmart stores in Jefferson County follow guidance from the state Department of Health, which has yet to issue its own guidance following the lift on mask restrictions from the CDC. ....
