Sprucing up military park | News, Sports, Jobs

Members of the Jefferson County Veterans Association, supported by Friendship Park employees, are sprucing up the JCVA Military Park in Smithfield for the association’s Memorial Day program by removing two earth and wooden bunkers in disrepair. Also on the JCVA agenda is repairing, scraping and painting the Vietnam-era observation plane, nicknamed “The Duck,” seen in the background of the photo, and painting the shelter located between the Military Park and Memorial Wall that is comprised of 888 bricks engraved with the names of veterans remembered by family and friends. The JCVA is seeking assistance from anyone interested in volunteering to restore “The Duck.” For information, call Frank Santa, commander, at (740) 769-2622 and leave a name and number for a return call. Association holds meeting
SMITHFIELD Frank Santa presided when the Jefferson County Veterans Association met recently at the Friendship Park office.
A meeting in February had been canceled because of inclement weather.
Members are working on plans for pouring concrete for a walk around the front of the Memorial Wall that bears the names of more than 600 veterans who served from the Civil War through present time.
A donation of flowers from the Sons of the American Legion Post No. 682 in Hopedale will be added along the wall in the spring.
Plans are to paint the picnic shelter on the grounds of the Veterans Memorial Park. The shelter is used for meetings and to place the sound equipment for the two programs held during the year. ....

Edward “Ed” Waldman, 92, formerly of Smithfield, OH, passed away Friday, January 1, 2021, at The Lindley Inn in The Plains, OH.
Ed was born July 8, 1928, in Bradley, OH, to the late Joseph and Mary Svarc Waldman Pozar. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 68 years, Toots, in 2019; two brothers, James and Joseph Waldman; his stepfather, Joseph Pozar; and three stepbrothers, Joseph, James, and Frank Pozar.
Ed is survived by his daughters, Cindy Jo Straus and Sherry Waldman, and his son, Edward, Jr. “Eddie” (Barbie Barlage), as well as his three devoted grandsons, Joshua (Jessica) Straus, Noah Straus, and Harm Rogman, who have all inherited their Pap’s do- it-yourself, hard-working ethic. He was also the beloved “Grandpa” to great-grandchildren, Kati Jo, Kalli Rae, Cole Thomas, and Declan Zane Straus. A stepsister, Albiney H. Paolucci of Hinckley, OH, also survives along with several nieces and nephews includ ....
