Interior Halting Oil and Gas Leases on Federal Lands, Offshore Through June
The U.S. Interior Department ceased new oil and gas lease sales on federal lands and offshore through at least June as officials this week extended a review of the program’s impact on climate change.
Interior’s Bureau of Land Management (BLM) said it is “exercising its discretion to not hold lease sales” through the second quarter. The action does not affect existing leases.
Federal officials earlier this year suspended or delayed lease sales in the Gulf of Mexico, the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska and in individual states such as Wyoming following lawsuits from conservation groups that argued drilling causes environmental problems for both people and wildlife. ....

Former Lititz pharmacist convicted of drug charges to settle related federal case for $2.9 million

A former Lititz pharmacist who for years illegally sold opioid and anti-anxiety drugs without prescriptions will pay $2.9 million to settle a federal civil case.
The agreement with Jeffrey Eshelman, who owns McElroy Pharmacy, would settle the lawsuit brought by the government that targeted crimes Eshelman pleaded guilty to in state court. The agreement, announced Thursday, must still be approved by a federal judge.
âThe opioid epidemic has devastated the lives of so many families and individuals across our country and this District. When healthcare providers such as pharmacists engage in illegal conduct that feeds the epidemic, our office will act,â Acting U.S. Attorney Jennifer Arbittier Williams said in a news release. âThis civil suit and consent judgment make clear that pharmacists who engage in illegal dispensing of opioids and healthcare fraud will be held accountable.â ....

On Thursday, the United States sued McElroy Pharmacy and owner-pharmacist Jeffrey Eshelman for unlawfully dispensing controlled substances and healthcare fraud. The Eastern District of Pennsylvania civil complaint charges the defendants with three counts of federal fraud-related violations, and alleges that Eshelman’s misconduct was especially egregious because he provided opioids to people with opioid use disorders, thereby causing serious public harm.
The complaint explains that the retail pharmacy located in the small community of Lititz, Pennsylvania was “an outlier in its geographic area as the top purchaser of high-risk Schedule II opioid hydrocodone.” When federal agencies investigated, they found that lead pharmacist and co-owner Eshelman, “engaged in a years-long practice of dispensing countless pills of high-risk hydrocodone to individuals in the Lititz area, knowing that the individuals had a substance use d ....
