Buffalo School parents, students push for new ‘Wellness Program,’ more healthy food options

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WKBW) — In a normal year, the Buffalo School District would serve around 29,000 meals a day through the Child Nutrition Program, which is mostly federally funded. Since the pandemic started, the Food Services Director, Bridget O’Brien Wood, said they have only been preparing between 10,000 to 12,000 meals a day.
“We get reimbursed for every meal we serve,” Wood said. “Because our meals have dropped significantly, we lost a lot of revenue because we don’t have the capacity to serve 29,000 kids if they are not in school.” ....

“We know that children are in a mental health crisis — parents can barely survive,” remarked Jessica Bauer Walker, mother, president, Buffalo Public Schools Community Health Worker Parent Association.
Buffalo Public School mothers and caregivers say they are frustrated, tired and want change. They appeared at a news conference Wednesday to call on the district to hear their struggle and offer support.

BUFFALO, N.Y. While the school reopening debate continues with some parents in suburban school districts filing lawsuits, some parents in the Buffalo School District just want, at this point, to be able to speak with their superintendent and other decision-makers about reopening ideas.
They are a group of moms, caregivers, and health workers, and they are not pleased. As Khadijah Hussein puts it, Right now I cannot explain enough how frustrated I am with the district. ....

'I'm in jail': BPS mothers and caregivers voice concerns with district reopening plans

Irizarry and members of the Community Health Worker Network of Buffalo Parent Association are voicing their concerns about the strain the school year has put on mothers and caregivers, and about feeling left out of having a say in Buffalo Public Schools reopening plans.
Parent Association President Jessica Bauer Walker says the reopening process must include the input of parents, and communication can no longer be a one-way street.
“We’re here to say as mothers, nothing about us without us is for us,” she said. “We are, in addition to all the work we’re doing as mothers, as community health workers, as caregivers, going to multiple district meetings, sharing our ideas and then the district makes decisions that have nothing to do with what we’ve shared. It’s very frustrating.” ....
