Researchers identify new molecular mechanisms in chronic skin inflammation
Frequently occurring chronic skin inflammation like in atopic dermatitis (AD or neurodermatitis) and psoriasis have different causes such as genetic predisposition, stress or allergens.
These frequently occurring skin diseases are mostly attributed by biomedical scientists to a disturbed immune system, although the noticeable thickening and flaking of the epidermis, which is the outermost layer of skin, also indicates a disruption of the epithelial cells.
A team of researchers from the University Clinic for Dermatology and the Clinical Institute for Laboratory Medicine at MedUni Vienna has now been able to identify new molecular mechanisms as causes that could provide suitable starting points for new therapies. ....

How was the study performed?
The group worked with 4,488 high-risk COVID-19 outpatients being over 40 years of age and having at least one other comorbidity such as diabetes or obesity. The group was split into two equal sizes, one of which received a placebo, while the other received 0.5 mg colchicine, an anti-inflammatory, daily for a month. The findings could help develop new treatments for many neurological diseases with the same change, including Parkinson s and Alzheimer s.
When the nervous system is injured, diseased or infected, star-shaped cells, called astrocytes, undergo reactive changes in their behavior. Whilst some of these reactive astrocytes become protective, others become harmful and damage surrounding motor neurons.
