Trudeau says federal security, tax agencies must do more to end Islamophobia


 
OTTAWA
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called out federal security and tax agencies during a national summit on Islamophobia, saying they must do more to put an end to anti-Muslim sentiments in Canada.
Speaking to the meeting organized by the government, Trudeau said the public service needed to put those Muslims who have experienced hate at the centre of federal efforts to address the issue.
From the (Canada Revenue Agency) to security agencies, institutions should support people, not target them, he said.
He also called on other levels of governments, businesses and individual Canadians to root out Islamophobia and all types of hate and discrimination in society. ....

Government of Canada to reimburse self-employed workers who repaid the CERB

OTTAWA, ON, May 27, 2021 /CNW/ - Over the course of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Government of Canada has introduced historic measures to support Canadians, including the Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB). The CERB helped more than 8 million Canadians pay for things like food and rent when we first asked people to stay home and flatten the curve.
The CERB s eligibility criteria were made as broad and inclusive as possible so that workers who needed support could get it; especially for the self-employed whose income takes different forms.
As announced in February, self-employed workers who applied for the CERB and would have qualified based on their gross income are not required to repay the benefit, provided they also met all other eligibility criteria. Today, the Government of Canada announced further details on how this approach will be applied. ....

OTTAWA, ON, May 12, 2021 /CNW/ - In the first four years since its implementation, the Canada Child Benefit (CCB) has helped lift nearly 435,000 children out of poverty. Families entitled to the CCB with children under the age of six can expect to receive a bit more money in the bank this year.
The Honourable Diane Lebouthillier, Minister of National Revenue and the Honourable Ahmed Hussen, Minister of Families, Children and Social Development announced today that the CCB young child supplement (CCBYCS) will take effect later this month.
The Government of Canada recognizes that young families in particular have been impacted by the unpredictable expenses of the COVID-19 pandemic. This money will help pay for things such as short-term child care arrangements, healthy food, clothes, and activities they can do at home as a family. ....
