Councillors sink proposal to extract €5m annual levy from water plan
EAST Clare councillors have sunk a proposal that could have netted an annual €5 million windfall to Clare County Council for new rural waste water treatment facilities.
Councillor Johnny Flynn withdrew a motion calling on the government to put a funding mechanism in place to place a one cent levy per 100 litres of water abstracted from Lough Derg, if this project to provide water to the Midlands and Dublin region goes ahead.
The proposal met with opposition from East Clare councillors who described it as “premature”.
With up to €10 million annually shared by Tipperary and Clare Clare County Councils, Coucillor Flynn told a recent Council meeting a new strategy could provide waste water treatment to 55 Clare unsewered towns and villages and could also support rural tourism, enterprises and housing.

The Chair of Clare County Council’s Housing Committee says he does not have confidence in Minister Darragh O Brien to sort out the housing crisis.
It comes as local representatives here are calling for the maximum income threshold in this county for those applying for social housing to be increased.

Even before the pandemic hit, it’s been far too long since I got a chance to go out to the matches. Seems like I always have other stuff going on, like a job or a writing thing. Once these major companies get up and running again, and make their way towards the Greater Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky area, I’ll do whatever I can to be there and enjoy some pro wrestling alongside my fellow wrestling fans.
Assuming, of course, that we beat this pandemic thing and live wrestling shows with big crowds becomes a safe endeavor again. We’re getting close!

Online planning applications on the way say Clare County Council

PEOPLE in Clare will soon be able to apply to build a house from the comfort of their couch, with plans in place for the introduction of online planning applications.
It is expected that the new system will be implemented by Clare County Council next year. Councillor Cillian Murphy outlined the need for an online system to submit planning applications at the monthly meeting of the council.
He described it as “crazy” that people prepare planning applications digitally on a computer before printing them out and travelling to the planning office, where they are then digitised again by scanning. He said this is a waste of resources, pointing out there would be environmental benefits if planning agents did not have to travel to the planning office.

Hype-worthy: Ottawa startup Hyperion lands $2M seed round to build out carbon-capture system


An Ottawa cleantech firm on a self-described mission to “turn dirty air into dollars” is turning investors’ heads with its groundbreaking technology that converts greenhouse gases emitted by heavy industry into products that can be used in everything from green building materials to toothpaste.
Hyperion Global Energy says its patented system will be ready for market before the end of this year. 
Nearly a decade in development, the technology has caught the eye of industrial giants such as European cement producer LafargeHolcim. Hyperion, which is based out of Invest Ottawa’s accelerator at Bayview Yards, is now in talks to install prototypes of its “carbon recycling” modules in LafargeHolcim’s plants, where the system will collect CO2 from factory smokestacks and turn it into valuable materials such as calcium carbonate.
