GRAY, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Georgia’s Secretary of State handed control of a Jones County cemetery to a court-ordered receiver.
Former Jones County Coroner, Jerry Bridges, was sentenced to 20 years in prison in December after being convicted on dozens of fraud charges related to taking money for prepaid funerals and burial expenses and using it for other purposes.
In addition to prison time, Bridges was sentenced to pay more than $200,000 in restitution to victims, and he had to allow the state to seize and sell his cemetery.
The receiver will distribute assets to the people Bridges defrauded as defined by a court-approved plan. ....

GRAY, Ga. - A disgraced Georgia cemetery owner began serving his prison sentence after admitting he stole from people who thought they were pre-paying for their funeral needs.
Jerry Bridges, 77, pled guilty in November on 43 counts related to theft and fraud. The allegations involve $216,000 in missing money originally paid to Bridges for future funerals, burials, and perpetual care of gravesites.
“That just boiled me,” said Mike Bryant, who’s 93-year-old mother paid Bridges $4,000. “I couldn’t see how anybody could do that.” ....
