House approves suicide prevention bill named in honor of Portsmouth teen Nathan Bruno

The House of Representatives today approved legislation sponsored by Rep. Terri Cortvriend to require all public school districts to adopt suicide prevention policies and train all personnel in suicide awareness and prevention annually.
The Nathan Bruno and Jason Flatt Act (2021-H 5353) would require all school personnel including teachers, administration, custodians, lunch personnel, substitutes, nurses, coaches, and coaching staff, even if volunteers to be trained in suicide prevention and awareness. The state Department of Education would establish the guidelines for the training curriculum.
The bill is named for Nathan Bruno, a 15-year-old Portsmouth High School student who took his life in 2018. Part of the bill is modeled after a state law passed in Tennessee and 19 other states, which was named after Jason Flatt, a 16-year-old from Nashville who died by suicide. ....

RI lawmakers moving on bill sparked by 15-year-old Portsmouth teen's suicide

PROVIDENCE A years-long effort to require suicide prevention training and awareness for all school personnel from teachers to coaches to custodians is making headway in the Rhode Island legislature.
Nathan was a 15-year-old Portsmouth High School student when he took his life in 2018. The legislation was modeled in part on law, already in place in other states, that was first passed in Tennessee in 2007 after Jason Flatt, a 16-year-old from Nashville, died by suicide.
In 2019, Nathan s father, Rick Bruno, begged a R.I. legislative committee to spare other parents his pain.
“When my son died on February 7, 2018, I had only been notified a week earlier about an [ongoing] issue with . a coach, school administration and law enforcement. I had no idea that any issue existed.” ....

RI bridges need 'lockboxes' to aid suicide prevention

Bridge jumping is a relatively rare occurrence, but not in Newport County and not in the past couple of months. Three people lost their lives jumping off Newport County bridges and 27 lost their lives in the past nine years.
When it comes to suicide in the U.S., the most common means is by firearms, which accounts for about 55% of the suicide deaths, followed by suffocation, poisoning and jumping.
It may seem obvious to anyone who lives in Newport County as to why a person would contemplate jumping off a bridge. Bridges are everywhere. They are convenient and link our islands together. The paradox is that people around here don’t enjoy crossing bridges. They prefer to stay put, and yet they may consider jumping off the bridge, if distraught enough. ....

Wyoming suicide rates: Another year of loss

At night the girlâs feelings of loneliness and isolation often intensify.
Shore begins her calls by ensuring the girl is in a safe place. Then she asks the grandparents about lethal means. In Wyoming, 75% of suicides involve a firearm, though medications and ropes also carry a risk.
More than anything, she encourages the couple to talk with their granddaughter openly and honestly about her suicidal thoughts.
âThey need someone to reach in, because itâs hard for them to be able to reach out,â Shore said.
Through therapy and positive coping techniques, that family now has a path to recovery. Shore feels momentary relief, but also a lingering sadness. ....
