Secretary of Agriculture Highlights 20 Million-Pound Milestone for State’s Agricultural Surplus System

Harrisburg, PA – Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding today announce that the state s program that rescues surplus agricultural products from waste and redirects it to the charitable food system, the Pennsylvania Agricultural Surplus System (PASS), has officially exceeded more than 20 million pounds of food. That s 20 million pounds of fresh, locally produced products put into the hands of those who need it most over the past five years.
In a state as agriculturally rich as Pennsylvania, no one should go hungry. In 2016, Governor Wolf acknowledged the need for a connection between the agriculture industry and our charitable food system by funding the Pennsylvania Agricultural Surplus System, said Redding. Adagio Health, a nonprofit organization focused on providing health care services in underserved communities, will host the Adagio Health: Better Health Outcomes Speaker Series, beginning Thursday.
The first part of the series will feature Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank President & CEO Lisa Scales alongside Feeding Pennsylvania Executive Director Jane Clements-Smith.
The speaker series format is not new to Adagio Health. The Transforming Women’s Health symposium launched in 2018 and 2019 but took a pause in 2020 during the pandemic.
