Jane Marmaduke Woodman DINING OUT REVIEW; THE SECOND CHANCE DINER: When you think of diners, you probably don’t think about flights of mimosas or mules (above), but that’s just the start of the surprises at the Second Chance Diner in Camillus. Read the full review. (Jane Marmaduke Woodman photo) Coronavirus Update SU’s Class of ’21 makes it to the finish line: Last summer, Syracuse University invited back 23,000 students and 5,000 employees for a year of uncertainty. Families and students wondered if it was worth the hefty price tag to sit in a dorm room watching a professor on the screen. Kids doubted it would last. They packed like it was a two-week vacation. No one thought they would make it to the end of the year. They did. Here are their sto ....
First time’s a charm at Second Chance Diner (Dining Out Review) Updated 11:35 AM; Facebook Share Camillus, N.Y. When we think of diners, we usually don’t anticipate great mimosas, but excellent mimosas were just the beginning of a series of happy surprises at Second Chance Diner in Camillus. The dining room is comfortable and quiet, and the staff is friendly and professional, making us welcome and never leaving us waiting long. Plenty of space between tables is maintained at Second Chance Diner.Jane Marmaduke Woodman Flights of mimosas and mules are offered, four for $14.99, as well as a “tower” of mimosas ($60) that contains more than two bottles of champagne and enough orange juice and other flavorings to create the style ordered. Bear Creek in Brewerton: If you like a bar with great food, this is it (Dining Out Review) Updated 9:00 AM; Today 9:00 AM We ll long remember the maple butter and bacon on our Bear Creek burger. Jane Marmaduke Woodman Facebook Share Brewerton, N.Y. When we reviewed Bear Creek in its original location a couple of years ago, we were struck by two non-food elements of the place: the cavernous feel of the dining room and the extraordinarily helpful, friendly staff. The new Bear Creek, where the original’s owners are no longer involved, is a smaller place with the big screen televisions and loud music usually associated with a bar that serves food. That atmosphere is exactly what the new owner told us he was after, his intent being to draw the “25-to-50 crowd” that wants to “grab a burger and a beer.” ....
Safe Travels: 20 waterside dining gems to visit in Upstate New York Updated 6:00 AM; Editor’s Note: This is part of an ongoing series that features things to do in Upstate New York while we still experience the Covid-19 pandemic. Before venturing out, please take proper precautions and check for any changed business hours, park hours or availability. Safe travels! Any state with the geographic diversity of New York is replete with waterside dining possibilities. Upstate, we are not, of course, talking about the oceanside venues of Long Island or the Big Apple waterfront icons, but we do have an abundance of river-side, lake-side, pond-side and creek-side choices that can put those to shame. ....
Mona Lisa Ristorante: A new choice for excellent Italian food (Dining Out Review) Updated 9:00 AM; Facebook Share Solvay, N.Y. There are a lot of Italian restaurants in this area, so one might wonder whether we need another. If the additional choice is as good as Mona Lisa’s, our answer is an emphatic YES! After containing Morgan’s Restaurant for decades, the pretty house at 329 Fay Road in Solvay became Mona Lisa Ristorante at an awkward time. Opening about six months before COVID hit, building a new business has to have been an uphill climb. Given the quality we found, the newish restaurant owned and operated by the Corless family deserves every success. ....
