LOS ANGELES - Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva has notified District Attorney George Gascón that he will begin sending his sheriff s detectives to parole hearings to give victims a voice as long as the newly elected DA continues to refuse to allow his prosecutors to attend them as part of his new reforms.
I cannot understand why your office is barring prosecutors from attending parole hearings, the letter penned by Villanueva to Gascón reads. The purpose of the correspondence is to notify you, if prosecutors will no longer be allowed to attend parole hearings, the LASD will attend parole hearings in the absence of your prosecutors. ....

Immediately after progressive DA George Gascon was sworn in he put in place a series of new rules including one that prevented prosecutors from attending parole hearings. That decision is one of several that have generated controversy.
Now LA County Sheriff Alex Villanueva has informed Gascon that in the absence of prosecutors at these hearings, he will be sending his own investigators to stand up for victims and their families:

LOS ANGELES - In 1981, it was one of the biggest stories in Los Angeles. A story making headlines not only locally, but all across the country. The parolee, known as the Subterranean Rapist terrorized Los Angeles, raping up to 50 women.
The convicted rapist, born James Edward Hughes, had been denied parole twice but has another hearing coming up in April and prosecutors won t be allowed to attend due to Los Angles County DA George Gascón s policy change.
FOX 11 spoke with one of the victims, who was 19 when Hughes stabbed and sexually assaulted her inside a garage. The victim who we ll call Jane to protect her identity is outraged and feels abandoned by the DA s office. ....
