LAS VEGAS (AP) Law enforcement officers with years of sustained citizen complaints, allegations of sexual misconduct or criminal arrests are still working in one southern Nevada city, and some have been promoted, a newspaper investigation of discipline and accountability found.
One Henderson police officer, now a lieutenant, faced about 50 allegations with nearly a dozen sustained allegations over his 18-year career, records show. He violated use-of-force rules by kicking a man having diabetic seizure during a highly publicized traffic stop, threatened another while serving a warrant and lied in a police report, according to internal affairs documents. Despite that, he was promoted twice. ....

Learning about system stability from ants

Credit: James Herndon
A new type of collective behaviour in ants has been revealed by an international team of scientists, headed by biologist Professor Iain Couzin, co-director of the Cluster of Excellence Centre for the Advanced Study of Collective Behaviour at the University of Konstanz and director at the co-located Max Planck Institute of Animal Behavior, and Matthew Lutz, a postdoctoral researcher in Couzin s lab. Their research shows how ants use self-organized architectural structures called scaffolds to ensure traffic flow on sloped surfaces. Scaffold formation results from individual sensing and decision-making, yet it allows the colony as a whole to adjust dynamically to unpredictable environmental challenges. ....

LAS CRUCES - New Mexico State University professors in a number of fields including chemistry and biochemistry, physics, psychology, agriculture and engineering have been listed in a worldwide database of top scientists created by Stanford University and recently published in the journal Public Library of Science Biology.
The Stanford study measured scientists’ career-long citation impact up until the end of 2019 and separately for citation impact during the single calendar year of 2019. It lists the top 100,000 scientists in all fields and includes those who are not in the top 100,000 of all research disciplines, but are within the top 2% of scientists of their main subfield discipline. ....

An argument for the Minor Leagues for the skeptics out there

An argument for the Minor Leagues for the skeptics out there

In the last few pieces I’ve written about Major League Baseball’s plans to restructure Minor League Baseball (in a transparent attempt to squeeze a few dollars out of their substantially less profitable subsidiaries, but I digress) I’ve noticed a running trend. Quite a few of you have commented with remarks like ‘this isn’t a big deal to me,” or “I just can’t get all that worked up about this.”
Well, I hear you. In fact, I’ll be perfectly clear I don’t have a personal story of how MiLB changed my fandom or anything like that. My love of baseball was solidified in games with the neighbors in our yards growing up and Little League fields in Carbon County, Utah. I didn’t see a Minor League Baseball game until I was in college, long after I’d fallen in love with the Cubs on WGN. However, all of our stories are a bit different so I posted on Twitter to se ....
