Extra Unemployment Funds Partly Blamed For Unfilled Jobs | News, Sports, Jobs

Are the extra payments on unemployment keeping people from returning to the workforce? Some area leaders believe that is at least part of the case.
In an interview, state Assemblyman Andy Goodell noted that there are a number reasons why he believes people haven’t returned. Among them:
¯ Some parents can’t go to work because their schools have not fully reopened. “Businesses are reopening ahead of schools that leaves some parents without childcare,” he said.
¯ Many receiving more in unemployment than they would earn in an entry level job. “You can’t expect people to search for work and rejoin the labor force when it costs them more money for childcare and transportation and they’re going earn less working than they are unemployed,” he said. ....

Comedy Center Official Receives Tourism Award | News, Sports, Jobs

Dallas Thurn, manager of operations and technology at the National Comedy Center, was recently honored with a Tourism Excellence Award by the New York State Tourism Industry Association for “Excellence in Young Professional Leadership.”
The 2021 NYSTIA Tourism Excellence Awards honors state tourism professionals’ work in an extraordinary year. The award for Young Professional Leadership recognizes the brightest rising star in New York state tourism and only one honoree is selected statewide. Thurn was selected because of his abilities, strong commitment to increasing his expertise in the travel and tourism industry, and his achievements in 2020.
Thurn was recognized for his leadership in the reopening of the National Comedy Center in 2020 after its 16-week closure due to COVID including the development and implementation of the National Comedy Center’s state-of-the-art COVID health and safety program “LaughSafe” which was recently called “ ....

Susan White Buck, 47, of Dunkirk, passed away suddenly on Monday (April 19, 2021) at home after a courageous battle with ovarian cancer.
She was born in Dunkirk on Oct. 26, 1973, the daughter of Dianna (Lilly) White-Corter and the late David White and stepfather, Dave Corter.
A lifelong resident of the area, Susan graduated from Fredonia High school with the class of 1991. She then obtained her computer technology associates degree from Jamestown Business College. She was previously employed by Ameriprise in Dunkirk, Johnson Mackowiak and Associates in Fredonia and most recently employed at Evergreen Health in Jamestown surrounded by her loved coworkers and friends. ....

Maj-Britt S. Traynor, 95, of Bemus Point, N.Y., passed away peacefully in her home on Monday April 5, 2021.
Maj-Britt was born in Varmland, Sweden on May 7, 1925. She immigrated to the United States with her parents, Carl Oscar Anderson and Linnea S. Gustafson Anderson in 1931 and like so many others grew up as a proud Swedish-American in Jamestown, N.Y.
After moving to Bemus Point, N.Y. she was graduated from Bemus Point Central School in 1944. She continued her education attending Alfred University and Jamestown Business College. She served as Youth Ambassador to Finland, US representative to Operation Democracy in Denmark, served on the New York State Town Affiliation Committee, and the Young Adult Civic Council. Building community and bringing people together was very important to her throughout her life, especially evident as a member of the Sister Cities Affiliation Program.
