1. Indian variant makes up as many as 75% of UK cases
Health Secretary Matt Hancock says as many as 75% of new coronavirus cases in the UK are of the variant first discovered in India, which is thought to be more transmissible. Public Health England says a total of 6,959 cases of this variant have been confirmed in the UK. The figures represent a rise of 3,535 on the previous week. Earlier, Prime Minister Boris Johnson says we may need to wait for the lifting of all Covid restrictions in England, which is planned for 21 June after warning of an increase in the number of cases of the variant. The final stage would see all legal limits on social contact removed, nightclubs would reopen, and restrictions on large events and performances would be lifted. ....

Goodbye Nasal Swab: AI Can Diagnose COVID-19 by Listening to Coughs

Goodbye Nasal Swab: AI Can Diagnose COVID-19 by Listening to Coughs
1 month ago
Brain-poking nasal swabs may soon be a thing of the past, thanks to a team of scientists that have trained AI to recognize COVID by listening to coughs.
The most reliable way to detect the coronavirus is by using an invasive, eye-watering nasal swab test. Scientists have found that artificial intelligence can detect the virus simply by listening to an individual’s cough.
According to the University of Essex, the researchers used 8,380 clinically-validated samples from Spain and Mexico including both positive and negative results to test the DeepCough3D screening tool. The AI was found to be 98% accurate in identifying both positive and negative samples. ....

Mar 9, 2021
Scientists have developed a new tool that they claim can accurately detect a coronavirus infection based on the sound of a person s cough. Researchers collected 8,380 audio samples of people coughing from patients in hospitals in Spain and Mexico and created an algorithm to analyze the audio.
They found the algorithm correctly identified samples of people with COVID-19 98% of the time. The researchers from the University of Essex hope that their new app will eventually make it easier for people to diagnosis themselves from the comfort of their own homes.
We are delighted with the promising results of this novel screening tool, which could prove a real game-changer and essential addition to our arsenal of tools to combat the pandemic,  said lead researcher Dr.  ....
