Columbia Market House reopens Memorial Day weekend after a $3.5M renovation; here's what to expect


Columbia Market House will be the scene of much activity during Memorial Day weekend when it reopens its doors to the public.
The building at 15 S. Third St. in the borough closed in December 2017 to undergo $3.5 million in construction and renovation paid for with a combination of state and local funds.
Now, after what seemed like an eternity, the wait is over and a much-anticipated grand opening for the 152-year-old market house will be held Saturday. Free parking is available in the lot next to market building.
“This market house has a rich history and we are extremely excited to bring it back to its glory, so we have planned an entire weekend of events to celebrate the reopening,” said Kelsey Miller, healthy communities manager at CHI St. Joseph Children’s Health, which manages the market. “And each event is geared to highlight a different aspect of the market.” ....

Columbia Market House opening, 3 new businesses in York, Lancaster


After three years sitting empty, the Columbia Market House will be re-opening next month. 
The historic market, which dates back to 1869, will re-open on Saturday, May 29 featuring 19 local vendors and a full-service restaurant, Gypsy Kitchen.
We re bringing life back to this building for the community, market manager Kelsey Miller said. 
Miller, who doubles as the healthy communities program manager at CHI St. Joseph Children’s Health, will oversee daily operations at the market. CHI St. Joseph Children’s Health and the Columbia Borough have partnered together to breathe new life into the historic site. 
Columbia Borough manager Mark Stivers said the market had been vacant since 2017. The current project began picking up steam in summer 2019 and now the grand opening will market the completion of the first phase of the near $3 million project, he said. The second phase will include additional parking for the market house and visitors to downtown Columbia ....

A renovated Columbia Market House eyes Memorial Day weekend for reopening date


A renovated Columbia Market House featuring more than a dozen vendors and an anchor restaurant will reopen Memorial Day weekend.
Borough officials hope the updated market house and other projects including a new hotel, a mixed-use apartment and retail complex, and the redevelopment of several acres along the Susquehanna River will provide a much-needed boost to the local economy.
“We are very excited about the market opening soon,” Mayor Leo Lutz said. “We had anticipated that if we put some effort and got things moving, folks would notice that things are indeed happening in Columbia and investors would start taking advantage of that.” ....

Free meals distributed to people in need in Lancaster County


A Susquehanna Valley group is stepping up to help make sure no one goes hungry.A crisis meal handout was held Friday morning at the Pequea Township Police Department. It was part of an effort by CHI St. Joseph Children s Health to meet the need in the community.People were lined up more than an hour before the drive-thru distribution. Recipients did not have to register, and there was no income requirement.Each bag that was given out included a healthy, prepared meal in a microwavable, dishwasher-safe container. The bag also contained fruit and healthy snacks.“This isn t a poverty program, so you actually are seeing people that are hurting and traditionally would feel uncomfortable or would shy away from asking for help because they don t want to have to talk about their income or they feel it’s beneath them or that other people need it more,” said Phil Goropoulos, of CHI St. Joseph Children s Health.The nonprofit started handing out meals in Columbia last spring and ha ....
