Your guide to safe supply - The Cascade

How safe supply of drugs is saving lives and destigmatizing substance use
Judy Darcy, B.C.’s minister of mental health and addictions, announced last March that physicians could prescribe pharmaceutical alternatives to street drugs for people who use substances. In September, Dr. Bonnie Henry, B.C.’s provincial health officer, passed an order allowing registered nurses and registered psychiatric nurses to prescribe controlled substances in an attempt to increase access to a safer supply after a record-breaking number of drug toxicity deaths over the summer. One factor that contributed to this surge of deaths is an extremely toxic and illegally produced drug supply with high fentanyl concentrations in all illicit substances. This is in part due to border closures shutting off supply chains. ....

There was a record number of illicit-drug overdose deaths in British Columbia in 2020. And the Canadian Association for Safe Supply has linked this high number to inaction on the part of the provincial government.
According to the group s cofounder, Jordan Westfall, the province was caught flat-footed during a pandemic when we needed physical distancing and safe supply .
In a news release, he said that few could access that supply and it wasn’t exactly safe, although patients were never told that.”
That needs to change, Westfall said, 83,000 people struggle with opioid dependence placing them at higher overdose risk. ....

On Christmas Day, Jess Lamb needed three injectable vials of naloxone to revive her partner from a fentanyl overdose in their home.
The next day, when Patrick  Evans experienced an overdose again, it took three nasal sprays and one injection by Lamb to save their life.
“I was too scared to call 911 for the second overdose. I didn’t know what would happen to him,” said Lamb on the phone from the couple’s home in Cranbrook. ....

As Deaths Mount, No Timeline for Promised Overdose Prevention Sites

Provincial government announced plans for at least nine new overdose prevention sites across the province today.
At least nine new overdose prevention sites are coming to communities across B.C. as the province grapples with what is on track to be its deadliest year of illicit drug toxicity deaths.
The first 11 months of 2020  have seen 1,548 people die of overdoses. In 2018, the previous deadliest year, 1,549 people died in the full year.
The BC Coroners Service reported today that on average more than five people died each day in November for a total of 153 deaths in B.C.’s longest-running public health emergency. ....
