After a year of uncertainties, JMU found a way for incoming freshmen to get to know the campus in a COVID-19-friendly way. The universityâs class of 2025 will have the opportunity to participate in a scavenger hunt thatâll help them get acquainted with JMUâs buildings and landmarks. Since thereâs a 10-person limit to guided tours, the Office of Admissions decided to implement a safe yet fun activity for incoming students to get to know JMU. Abby Stott, assistant director of the Office of Admissions, said the board juggled a few ideas on how incoming freshmen can learn about JMUâs campus, but they ultimately settled on the scavenger hunt in the fall of 2020. ....

(WHSV) â A James Madison University Spanish professor has received a 4-VA grant for her project âCOVID-19 and Central Shenandoah Valley Spanish-Speaking Communities: Exploring Impact and Perceptions of COVID Toward Enhanced Rapid Response Health Communication and Care.â Professor Diana Galarreta says she got the idea after reading an article about how Spanish-speaking communities make up only 10% of the population in Virginia, but make up 45% of COVID-19 cases, 35% of hospitalizations, and 11% of coronavirus-related deaths. ....
The night before her first class at JMU in fall 2018, communication studies major Thu Nguyen had arrived in the U.S. after a 26-hour flight from Vietnam. As an international student, she said, she was excited about Americaâs diverse culture and the opportunity to study at JMU. In a classroom surrounded by over 200 students, Nguyen turned to the girl sitting next to her and asked what their next task was. She had never been in a class that big before and said she was confused about splitting into groups. â[The girl] was like, âWhy are you shy?ââ Nguyen said. ââThis is a free country â just do whatever you want.â And I was like, so shocked. And then, she just left me.â ....
