Church leaders oppose UK Govt. move to increase nuclear weapons stockpile

Church leaders oppose UK Govt. move to increase nuclear weapons stockpile
Following the UK government’s announcement of plans to increase its nuclear weapons stockpile, church leaders issue a joint statement denouncing the move as “immoral” and counterproductive to the gains of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.
By Vatican News staff writer
Church leaders in the United Kingdom have expressed their opposition to an announcement by the government to increase its nuclear weapons capacity by more than forty percent.
The government’s decision was included in the policy paper titled “Global Britain in a Competitive Age: the Integrated Review of Security, Defence, Development and Foreign Policy” which was issued on Tuesday. The planned move proposes increasing the number of Trident nuclear warheads the UK can stockpile from 180 to 260. ....

The Baptist Union of Great Britain : Book launch explores how Baptists do theology together

Book launch explores how Baptists do theology together
The official launch of a book charting the denominational reforms of the 1990s drew an audience of 80 participants to reflect on a key period of Baptist life and ask important questions about how Baptists do theology today

The Baptist Union of Great Britain : How do you normally observe Lent?

“Wilderness” is a rich and layered idea in the Old Testament - reflecting on it may offer some helpful ways forward as we seek to engage with Lent this year. By Helen Paynter
For many of us, Lent is a time when we give something up – fast, if you like – in order to realign ourselves with God and to seek to become closer to him. In this, we are modelling ourselves on Jesus’ actions after his baptism, when “the Spirit drove him into the wilderness” (Mark 1:12) for forty days of fasting, prayer, and testing.
This year, for many of us, the idea of giving something else up is intolerable. We may feel that we have spent the whole of the last year in the wilderness, deprived of so much that we value and love. ....

Christian unity in diversity, with retired Cardigan vicar Rev John Powell

THE week beginning January 18 is the week of prayer for Christian Unity. It ends on January 25, the day that we celebrate the Conversion of St Paul, the great missionary of the early Church.
Jesus prays in his personal prayer, to be found in the Gospel of St John chapter 17, that all his followers “may be one”. Christians today are not one, but are divided into very many different groups.
There has been a great deal of work done to bring Christians together, but the closest that we have got is “unity in diversity.”
Perhaps this is a good thing because it reflects our differences but acknowledges our unity. ....
