At UF Health and Baptist Health, leaders look toward returning to the strategic plans in place before COVID-19 struck.
Following a challenging 2020, area hospital leaders hope to normalize operations on their campuses as COVID-19 cases decline and vaccines are distributed.
“We’ve spent the last several months managing COVID,” said Dr. Leon Haley, CEO of UF Health Jacksonville.
“Now we’ve shifted into managing COVID recovery and vaccine distribution to the degree we’re able to participate in that process while still maintaining our focus on our strategic initiatives.”
UF Health Jacksonville is the third-largest hospital in Northeast Florida with 462 beds, according to 2019 Agency for Healthcare Administration data, the latest available, on Florida hospital finances. Eighteen area hospitals are listed in the data in Duval, St. Johns, Nassau, Clay and Baker counties. ....

As COVID-19 cases surge, many area hospitals’ intensive care units are full or near full.
One of them is Baptist Medical Center Nassau, which had no available ICU space as of Monday evening, according to the state Agency for Health Care Administration. By Tuesday afternoon, one ICU bed had become available there, but across Northeast Florida, ICU availability was low.

A longtime resident and visitor to the City of Fernandina Beach was out for his morning run when he experienced sudden cardiac arrest.
A bystander performed CPR, notified 911 and used an AED (Automated External Defibrillator).
Mark was treated on scene and then transported to Baptist Medical Center Nassau where he was cared for by emergency room staff.
“Due to the willingness of citizens, the quick response of the Fernandina Beach Police Department, and Fernandina Beach Fire Department, Mark and his family will be celebrating another Christmas together,” a Facebook post said. ....
