NC Airbnb, Vrbo, and other short-term rental rules at risk by new bill


The west side of Cornelius ends in dozens of tiny peninsulas that spread across Lake Norman like tree roots through soil. The bedroom community north of Charlotte is only 15 square miles but boasts 75 miles of lakefront, likely the most of any North Carolina community.
Around a decade ago, locals noticed an uptick in the number of out-of-town guests booking homes through then-nascent rental platforms like Vrbo and Airbnb.
They weren t pleased.
“We’re not a vacation town,” said Frances Dawson, a realtor who lives in Cornelius. “The people who spent their good hard-earned money on these waterfront properties didn’t want to listen to loud music and 2 a.m. pool parties.” ....

The surge of film projects coming to North Carolina, the potential for expansion of the state’s film incentive and the need to train more people for careers in the industry were among the topics discussed at this week’s N.C. Film Forum session.
 
“State of the State” was the theme for Wednesday evening s session. Panelists were Johnny Griffin, director of the Wilmington Regional Film Commission; Susi Hamilton, chairwoman of the Governor’s Advisory Council on Film, Television and Digital Streaming; and Eric Johnson, a senior vice president at Trailblazer Studios in Raleigh. Dan Brawley, head of Cucalorus, moderated the virtual forum. ....

RALEIGH, N.C. (WECT) - Rep. Deb Butler (D-New Hanover) has filed a bill in the state House of Representatives to reestablish the film credit repealed by the General Assembly on January 1, 2015.
House Bill 810, sponsored by Butler and three other Democrat members from the Charlotte area, would reinstate the credit as it existed prior to when Republican members of the General Assembly ended the program. ....

As a future driven by electric vehicles draws closer, a proposal in Raleigh is hoping to make the state a little greener one plug  and home  at a time.
A bill introduced last month would mandate that every new home built in North Carolina be pre-wired for an electric car charger.
The idea isn’t to spark consumers to ditch their traditional combustion-engine vehicles, but to make a transition to an electric vehicle (EV) a little bit more affordable and attractive, said state Rep. Deb Butler, D-New Hanover, the bill’s primary sponsor.
“I think we all know the future is electric,” she said, “so I wanted to plant the seed so it’s something we can consider when we do amend the building code.” ....
