A system-wide power outage that affected Yellowknife, Dettah and Behchoko is now reported to be over.
The Northwest Territories Power Corporation (NTPC) first announced the power outage on Twitter Wednesday afternoon, shortly after the outage was felt in Yellowknife.
In an email, NTPC spokesperson Doug Prendergast said a lightning strike on the Snare hydro facility transmission line appeared to be the cause of the outage. ....

Residents of BehchokÇ«Ì, N.W.T.,Â can expect a power outage this afternoon, after a piece of heavy equipment toppled a power pole, knockingÂ out powerÂ and preventingÂ people from travelling in or out of Rae.Â
The road out of Rae has since reopened, but there will be a planned outage this afternoon to complete repairs, said the Northwest Territories Power Corporation.
The access road was blocked as the power corporation undertook initial repairs to de-energize the infrastructure, the power corporation says. ....

Noel Voykin has left his role as the president and CEO of the Northwest Territories Power Corporation, the utility provider confirmed Friday.
In an emailed statement to CBC News, Doug Prendergast, the corporation s communications manager, said Voykin would be pursuing other opportunities and that no further information would be provided because it s personnel matter.
Cory Strang, the current chief financial officer of NTPC, will serve as acting president and CEO while the board of directors establishes a process for filling the position on a long-term basis, said Prendergast. ....

“They are on the highway, some of them have RVs, camps-they have established jungle camps and things like that.”
He said other residents have stayed with relatives or friends.
The final evacuation order was issued at Fort Simpson around 3 pm on Sunday. Huili said that about 60 people remained in the community after the evacuation, but most people left after the power outage.
He said that the height of the river on Monday morning was about 15 meters, which was the threshold for general evacuation and was about the same level as Sunday night. He said the roads in the community were underwater and some houses were “submerged” by water. ....
