By Douglas Okoro Abakaliki, July 14, 2021 Federal Government Wednesday distributed 150 bags of improved variety of rice seedling and other inputs to farmers in Ebonyi. The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Alhaji Muhammad Nanono, said the gesture was intended to boost wet season rice farming in the state. According to him, the programme is an initiative of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (FMARD) and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The minister, represented by a director in the ministry, Mrs Khalima Babangida, said the items were freely distributed to farmers to boost rice production. Babangida, was also represented by another senior official of the ministry, Mr Augustine Okezie. ....
By Douglas Okoro Abakaliki, March 31, 2021 A pro-Igbo group, Alaigbo Development Foundation (ADF), has established pioneer farm projects in Imo and Ebonyi states to boost cooperative farming in rural communities. Mr Abia Onyike, the group’s Chairman, Bureau of Media and Publicity, said this in a statement on Wednesday in Abakaliki. Onyike said the farm projects were located in Ezinihite and Ahiazu in Mbaise Local Government area of Imo state and Oso-Edda in Afikpo South LGA of Ebonyi respectively. He noted that Prof. Uzodinma Nwachukwu, ADF’s President said the creation of the farms in the affected LGAs would serve as pilot schemes to mobilise youths to participate in cooperative farming. ....
By Douglas Okoro Abakaliki, March 5, 2021 Stakeholders in Ebonyi have called for the sustenance of zoning arrangement in the distribution of key elective offices in the state for the 2023 general elections . The stakeholders who spoke to newsmen on Thursday in Abakaliki in separate interviews, described zoning formula adopted by the state as ‘strategic and perfect’ for advancement of democracy. According to them, the initiative has reduced acrimony, tension and bitter political struggle for succession. They noted that sustaining the existing arrangement in 2023 and beyond would further cement the peace, unity and enhance existing bond among the different communities and cultures in the state. ....
By Douglas Okoro Abakaliki, Jan. 21, 2021 Scores of protesters on Thursday stormed the Abakaliki High Court complex to kick against the judge’s recusal from the suit on the dissolution of the Caretaker Committee of the Ebonyi Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The protesters, numbering at least 100 and believed to be loyal to the former Chairman of the committee, Chief Onyekachi Nwebonyi, marched to the court premises at about 4 pm to register their anger over the development. They started with a march through the major roads in Abakaliki metropolis, chanting war songs before heading for the court complex but warded off at the gate by security operatives. ....
By Douglas Okoro Abakaliki, Jan. 11, 2021 The Federal Government on Monday in Abakaliki inaugurated the Extended Special Public Works Programme (ESPWP), in Ebonyi. Dr Ogbonnaya Onu, the Minister of Science and Technology during the inauguration in Abakaliki, said that the programme was part of strategies by President Muhammadu Buhari to reduce hardship among the youth. He said that under the programme, participants would help to maintain public works owned by the Federal, state and local governments. According to the minister, no fewer than 13, 000 participants selected from across the 13 local government areas of the state will take part in the programme. Onu said that the programme would run for a period of three months. ....
