The AJT featured a picture of Hugh Morton during his political tour of North Carolina’s 100 counties on behalf of his possible candidacy for Governor. Morton is frequently asked, “Who is looking after the bears at Grandfather Mountain while you’re gone?” The answer is that Hugh Morton’s wife, Julia, is shown here feeding a cub named Nehru, a small Himalayan bear from India. Nehru is not nearly as tame as Grandfather Mountain’s mascot Mildred the Bear, so Julia Morton has to wear heavy gloves and coveralls to keep from being scratched when she feeds him. ....

W.A.M.Y. Community Action announces Jennings as new Director of Development


In her role, Jennings will direct events and expand fundraising efforts.
“We are so excited to welcome Allison into our W.A.M.Y. Community Action family as our new Director of Development,” said Executive Director Melissa Soto. “Allison will be a great partner in strengthening the culture of giving for W.A.M.Y. and raising the funds needed to support and expand our programs in the years ahead.”
Jennings has extensive experience working in the non-profit sector and recently served as the Resource Development Director for Watauga County Habitat for Humanity and was formerly the Food and Nutrition Coordinator for Hospitality House of Northwest NC. She currently serves on the Board of Directors for Quiet Givers. In September 2020, CFRE International named Jennings a Certified Fundraising Executive (CFRE). ....

CFWNC Awards $32,000 To Avery Schools

The Community Foundation of Western North Carolina has awarded $32,000 to Avery County schools from the Learning Links grant program.
High Country Press reports the grants include $4,000 to support classroom teachers, $3,000 to Marjorie Williams Academy for a SMART board, and $25,000 to W.A.M.Y. Community Action to continue to provide free childcare at three Avery County Schools.
Avery High, Avery Middle School and Cranberry Middle School were awarded classroom grants.
W.A.M.Y. received $25,000 to continue childcare services, enrichment activities, homework assistance, and more at no cost to families.
Learning Links grants are made possible by the Ben W. and Dixie Glenn Farthing Charitable Fund, the Cherokee County Schools Endowment Fund and the Fund for Education. ....
