Dozens rally against "Stand Your Ground" bill in Arkansas


LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KATV) — Dozens of state and religious leaders, as well as activists from across Arkansas, rallied at the Capitol Sunday to express concerns against the proposed stand your ground legislation.
The bill, sponsored by Sen. Bob Ballinger, R-Ozark, ends the duty to retreat when using physical or deadly force. SB 24 sailed through the senate on a 27-7 vote, but not before a heated debate that came down to race, your rights to defend yourself, and some arguing the current law is fine as is.
Ballinger argued that the current law on the books contains ambiguous language.
This is not a license to kill, this does not give you the ability to shoot first and answer questions later, this is the same policy that is in place in the majority of other states,” said Ballinger. ....

As the Arkansas House Judiciary Committee plans to hear a controversial “Stand Your Ground” bill on Tuesday, dozens of community leaders gathered against it.

LITTLE ROCK, Arkansas Black community leaders, groups, and allies stood together in support of stopping the Stand your Ground bill in front of the State Capitol Sunday afternoon. Over a dozen people were in attendance to support the Real Love press conference.
The Arkansas State NAACP, local NAACP chapters, W. Harold Flowers Law Society, Pine Bluff Mayor Shirley Washington, former judge Marion Humphrey, Judge Alice Gray, Rabbi Barry Block of Temple B nai, Citizens First Congress, Urban League, Arkansas United, Indivisible Little Rock and Central Arkansas all were present at the event.  ....
