Washington County Republicans elect new leaders

The Washington County Republican Party met Saturday and elected a new slate of officers for the next two years.
Retired Army Maj. Gen. Gary Harrell was elected chairman of the party at the reorganizational meeting held at the Jonesborough Middle School. He succeeds Dr. Turney Williams.
Harrell is a Jonesborough native and a 1973 East Tennessee State University ROTC graduate. During his long career in the military, Harrell saw action in Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm.
In 1992, Harrell took command of a squadron of the 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment, better known as Delta Force, at Fort Bragg in North Carolina. He participated in combat operations during the Battle of Mogadishu and he was severely wounded by enemy mortar fire in October 1993. ....

GOP strategist says Trump lost 'fair and square'

The former chairman of the state Republican Party told members of the East Tennessee Republican Club on Monday that while some ballots cast in the Novemberâs presidential election âwere not quite right,â he does not think widespread fraud is the reason Donald Tump lost his re-election bid by 7 million votes.
âIt was a tough night,â Saltsman told local Republicans meeting at the Carnegie Hotel in Johnson City. â I hate to say this, but we lost fair and square.â
The longtime Republican strategist said he doesnât think it was rigged voting machines or other irregularities on Election Day that cost Trump the win, but a âsystem set in placeâ that allowed Democrats to continue counting absentee ballots after the polls had closed. ....

While we applaud the efforts of the residents of our City and our City Government to be inclusive, we, the members of the Washington County Republican Executive Committee, would like to express our serious reservations regarding the creation of an âEquity Advisory Board.â This board would be created and funded by the City Commission to âadviseâ the City on issues of âequity.â The composition of this board is not defined.
This board would by definition represent only a very narrow segment of our community to the exclusion of the majority.
Johnson City has historically been a very progressive community, inclusive of all races and gender identities. We have a truly diverse City Commission and a diverse City School Board who are more than available and open to input from all interested citizens.
