The Region of Durham is applauding the province’s recent funding announcement that will help improve the quality of life for seniors and people living with disabilities.
The province recently announced funding of up to $60,000 for an Inclusive Community Grant for the Durham Enhanced Technology and Virtual Learning Series.
Through a proposed two-part initiative – involving virtual learning and increased access to public transit – the region and its local community partners are aiming to “improve access to safe, affordable transportation for seniors and those with disabilities, reduce social isolation, and maintain the dignity of older adults and people with disabilities, through enhanced virtual programming.” ....

DRT offering free round trips to get vaccine

Durham residents can now book a free round trip from their residence to a local vaccination clinic to receive their COVID-19 vaccine.
Using Durham Region Transit’s (DRT) On Demand or Specialized Services (eligibility required for Specialized Services), this temporary free service is funded by a $10,000 donation from Ontario Power Generation (OPG) in support of the province’s COVID-19 vaccine rollout.
“OPG is pleased to support this initiative to help ensure seniors across Durham who haven’t received a COVID-19 vaccine are able to do so,” states OPG Chief Nuclear Officer Sean Granville. “Combating this pandemic requires a heightened sense of community, and OPG is proud to do what we can to support.” ....

Durham council approves 2021 budget with a slight increase

Oshawa and Durham residents are looking at a 1.98 per cent property tax increase for this year.
Durham Regional Council recently approved the $1.488 billion budget, which is funded 48.9 per cent from property taxes.
This year, residents will see a 1.98 per cent increase on the region’s portion of their property tax bill, or approximately $55 for the average residential home assessed at $483,100.
Despite the fiscal pressures facing the region due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Durham Regional Chair John Henry says the regional departments presented a budget for 2021 that “upholds our high-quality programs and services, support key priorities and maintains taxpayer affordability.” ....
