All students that are registered to vote are presented with four ballots in today’s elections: Durham County Council, Durham Parish Council, County Durham Police and Crime Commissioner and a referendum on neighbourhood planning in Durham City. Students can vote even if they have already sent a postal ballot to vote at a different home address. Vote at your local polling station – including St. Nicholas Church Hall on Market Square, St. Oswald’s Church, The Hub (near South and John Snow College), and for those in the Viaduct area, The Spiritualist Church Hall on John Street. Local election polls have now opened, as hundreds of candidates contest 126 county councillor positions across County Durham. Durham University has ranked sixth amongst UK universities for the number of testimonies relating to sexual violence, assault and harassment submitted to the site “Everyone’s Invited”. There are currently 41 testimonies relating to Durham, ranking it between York (with 40) and UCL (with 48). Exeter University ranked the highest amongst the universities named by the site, with 65 testimonies relating to the University. Durham Survivors, a group aimed at exposing the reality of sexual abuse in the Durham community, told Palatinate that they are “saddened but not surprised by the number of testimonies shared to Everyone’s Invited related to Durham University”. The group revealed that on their own platform, they have received over 140 anonymous submissions of sexual violence and misconduct related to the Durham community since the inception of Durham Survivors in July 2020. ....
ONE of the men behind hit animation Wallace and Gromit will sponsor a new theatre scholarship at Durham University. David Sproxton, co-founder of the Academy Award-winning Aardman Animations, is offering a scholarship worth up to £16,000 over four years. It will help a prospective student with exceptional potential in technical aspects of theatre but who lacks the funds to make their creative vision a reality. Mr Sproxton, whose company has also produced Shaun the Sheep, Morph and many other animated favourites, was a student at Durham University and wants to support the next generation develop skills outside their academic discipline.
