Residents of a Dallas homeless encampment known as Camp Rhonda are being forced to relocate again. The property they’re staying on is industrially zoned, and the city gave the property owner until the end of February to bring the lot into compliance. ....

Winter Freeze Affects Texas Water Systems


Water in Dallas is safe to consume, but residents in cities across the state are being asked to boil or conserve their water as added demand caused partly by broken water lines and rolling power outages put pressure on the supply. As of Thursday morning, there were more than 840 disruptions to public water systems affecting 13.5 million people statewide, according to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.
Jose Velasquez, an international student at the University of Texas Arlington, has been able to hole up at the college since the state came to a freezing halt. While his power was out, he didn t even like going to his home because he was afraid of what condition he d find it in. ....

Mutual Aid Collectives Offer Lifeline for Dallas's Unhoused Population During the Winter Storm


In response, a collective of local activists and organizers sprung into action to ensure that Camp Rhonda’s residents could stay warm and have enough food to eat as Winter Storm Uri created a bonafide humanitarian crisis for Dallas-Fort Worth.
As the metroplex faced single-digit temperatures, howling winds, and snow that all but brought the city to a grinding halt, these activists have managed to support the sheltering of dozens of homeless individuals in motels and feed the hungry, all while raising hundreds of thousands of dollars to distribute to families in need across North Texas.
For the unfamiliar, Camp Rhonda describes itself as an “autonomous protest encampment,” where unhoused people can live without fear of being harassed by police. “Camp Rhonda was formed out of necessity due to agencies like the Office of Homeless Solutions and the Dallas Police Department criminalizing homeless people and sweeping [away] their tents and personal property,” says Rya ....
