TOWNSHEND — A new name is being proposed for Negro Brook, which flows down Bald Mountain in Townshend State Park.
At a remote meeting at 10 a.m. Thursday, the Vermont Board of Libraries will be resuming a public hearing on renaming it Susanna Toby Brook, after an early Black settler and longtime resident of Townshend who died in 1855 and whose husband fought in the Revolutionary War in place of his slaveholder’s son. West River Mutual Aid and the West River Community Project sent out messages encouraging local residents to participate in the meeting. ....

TCC donates supply packs to Townshend Elementary School

CARMEL, Ind. — Round Room LLC, the nation’s largest Verizon Authorized Retailer, announced that all 526 of its TCC stores donated appreciation boxes to more than 500 schools across the U.S., including Townshend Elementary School in Townshend.
The company’s eighth annual Teachers Rock Supply Giveaway took place during the week of Feb. 15 to show support for teachers who are juggling many education hurdles caused by the coronavirus pandemic. Since 2014, TCC has donated more than 40,000 supply packs to deserving teachers across the country.
Each participating TCC store partnered with a local, deserving school to donate supply packs that are valued at more than $360 each. The appreciation packs include many virtual and in-person teaching essentials including snacks, permanent markers, tissue packs, sticky notes, coffee, hand sanitizer and more. ....

West River board mulls funding building needs

TOWNSHEND — Looking to get a handle on deferred maintenance and needs at school buildings, the West River Education District board will be weighing options including borrowing.
Laurie Garland, chief financial officer at Windham Central Supervisory Union, said the district could seek a 10-year bond at a time when lending rates are currently favorable.
“To dig into this,” she said at the board meeting held remotely Dec. 21, “we would need more information from the engineers and the bond bank.”
As much as $2 million is estimated to address building needs and deferred maintenance in the next few years for schools in Jamaica, Newfane and Townshend. ....

TOWNSHEND — Air system work, which caused delayed returns to in-person instruction at schools in the West River Education District, is wrapping up.
“West River is about 90 percent complete from the original project scope that we started with about four months ago,” Chris Medina, director of operations at Windham Central Supervisory Union, said at the West River Education District board meeting held remotely Dec. 21.
Medina said during a project meeting with Alliance Mechanical about a week prior to the board meeting, he learned about eight members of a service installation team were under quarantine for COVID-19 or sick at the time. A deadline extension for the project was approved by Efficiency Vermont so the district would still be eligible for grant funding. ....
