The University of Minnesota’s path to banishment was long, turbulent, and full of emotion
On the evening of April 6th, a student emailed a patch to a list of developers. Fifteen days later, the University of Minnesota was banned from contributing to the Linux kernel.
“I suggest you find a different community to do experiments on,” wrote Linux Foundation fellow Greg Kroah-Hartman in a livid email. “You are not welcome here.”
How did one email lead to a university-wide ban? I’ve spent the past week digging into this world the players, the jargon, the university’s turbulent history with open-source software, the devoted and principled Linux kernel community. None of the University of Minnesota researchers would talk to me for this story. But among the other major characters the Linux developers there was no such hesitancy. This was a community eager to speak; it was a community betrayed. ....

Once-in-a-decade snowpack makes for dangerous conditions in the backcountry

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS In an “extremely close call” in the backcountry east of Vail on Saturday, a snowboarder got caught in an avalanche that carried him through the trees and buried him under about a foot and a half of snow.
The AvaLung breathing system he had and transceiver his partner used to find him which took about 15 minutes likely saved his life.
Colorado is seeing a once-in-a-decade snowpack that has not been this bad since 2012, according to Eric Green, director of the Colorado Avalanche Information Center. The poor snowpack has also been deadly, with the 15 deaths in the first week of February in the U.S. being the most recorded since 1910. Eight of the deaths were Coloradans. ....

Poor early season snow causes increased avalanche risk across Colorado

Editor’s note: This story has been updated to clarify what Gilchrist said. He said slides can happen at any depth of snow and in years with such a faceted base like this year, the snowpack will be touchy for a while.
STEAMBOAT SPRINGS There is “considerable” avalanche danger across the state of Colorado, and three skiers died after being caught up in avalanches over the weekend, one near Crested Butte and two more near Silverton.
While those fatal avalanches took place in the southern half of the state, all but one zone is forecasted to have “considerable” risk for avalanche, meaning that natural avalanches are possible and slides caused by humans are likely. ....
