SOUTHWEST HARBOR There were 147 votes cast on Tuesday during the election portion of Southwest Harbor’s annual Town Meeting. All races were uncontested, with all but the one seat on the Board of Selectmen going to incumbents. Dan Norwood was the only candidate for the open Board of Selectmen seat, and he won with 128 votes. Susan Allen and John Bench were reelected to their seats on the Southwest Harbor School Committee. Ann Ratcliff was reelected to serve on the Mount Desert Island High School Board of Trustees. ....
Town Meeting takes place in Southwest Harbor this Saturday SOUTHWEST HARBOR This Saturday at 10 a.m., the annual Town Meeting is being held at the fire station on Main Street. On Tuesday, June 8, the town elections will also take place there. In the open floor portion of the meeting, residents will vote on 43 articles, including those for the town and school budget, area nonprofits and one asking if the town should pursue federal grant funds for two projects in town. Voters are being asked to approve a school budget of $4,220,474, a $200,000 increase over last year’s budget. Of that amount, the town is being asked to appropriate $3,485,154, which is less than $50,000 over last year’s amount. ....
MDI trail system nominated for historic places registry SOUTHWEST HARBOR Worried about possible future constraints on private and public property, selectmen voted Tuesday to submit a letter to the Maine Historic Preservation Commission outlining several concerns regarding a nomination of the Mount Desert Island Hiking Trail System to the National Register of Historic Places. Notices regarding this nomination were previously sent a year ago, on April 17, 2020, to each town on Mount Desert Island regarding the nomination. That was a month after nearly all public events were shut down due to COVID-19. Selectmen and the Bar Harbor Town Council were trying to figure out how to continue meeting via Zoom, among other pressing town business, and may not have had time to review these notices. ....
