ATLANTA (CNN) Miscarriages are common. Some 23 million pregnancies worldwide end in miscarriage every year that s 15% of all pregnancies or 44 each minute, according to new estimates published in The Lancet medical journal on Monday.
However, existing care and support for women and couples is inconsistent and poorly organized and amounts to little more than patients being told to just try again, said the authors of three new studies on the causes, treatment and scale of miscarriage around the world. A new system is needed to ensure miscarriages are better recognized by health care practitioners and women are given the physical and mental health support they need, the researchers said. ....

PARIS One in seven pregnancies worldwide ends in miscarriage, and eleven per cent of women endure a failed pregnancy at least once in their lifetime, experts said Tuesday.
Some 23 million miscarriages occur every year, according to data pieced together from around the globe by an international team of 31 researchers.
But the actual tally is sure to be “substantially higher” due to underreporting, they said in a trio of studies published in The Lancet.
Two per cent of women one in 50 have experienced two miscarriages, while less that 1 per cent have been through three or more. ....

Black women face a significantly higher risk of having a miscarriage than white, research suggests.
The Lancet analysis of data on 4.6 million pregnancies in seven countries suggests being black increases miscarriage risk by 43%.
It calls for people in the UK to be given support after their first pregnancy loss.
Currently, referral to specialist clinics usually occurs after three consecutive losses only.
Most countries, including the UK, do not collect statistics.
But researchers estimate:
1% of women will experience recurrent miscarriage
Some estimates of miscarriage rate are higher, but this is due to differences in how countries define pregnancy loss, which can be from a positive pregnancy test or from a scan. ....
