Cable car development on sacred Tasmanian mountain rejected

The Tasmanian Aboriginal community has welcomed the Hobart City Council’s decision to reject a development application to build a cable car on kunanyi/Mount Wellington.
The application was submitted by the Mount Wellington Cableway Company, which was defeated nine votes to three at a special Hobart City Council meeting last night.
“The land itself is a part of who we are, and we are a part of the land,” Aboriginal Heritage Officer with the Tasmanian Aboriginal Centre Sharnie Read said.
One of the important parts of this whole saga is the lack of Aboriginal community members at the decision making process. ....

Palawa leaders urge Tas government to keep 4WD tracks closed

Aboriginal leaders are urging the Tasmanian government to rule out reopening 4WD tracks on culturally significant land in the state s rugged northwest.
A cultural assessment report found a proposal to allow off-road vehicles on three tracks in the Arthur-Pieman Conservation Area does not minimise risk to Aboriginal heritage sites.
The tracks, which contain middens thousands of years old plus stone artefacts, were closed in 2012.
The Liberal government pledged to reopen them during the 2014 election campaign and had a legal challenge against the closure dismissed in the Federal Court two years later.
This report . I think it will kill the idea that these areas should be subjected to 4WDs. The government doesn t really have anywhere to go,  Aboriginal Land Council chairman Michael Mansell told AAP.  ....

City of Launceston considers new flag policy
The City of Launceston will next week consider a new Flying of Flags policy which would see the Aboriginal flag flown permanently alongside the Australian flag on the Town Hall and Albert Hall.
Should the new policy be adopted, it would pave the way for planning applications to be lodged in order to allow additional flagpoles on the roofs of both buildings.
The Aboriginal flag is already flown by the Council each day at the city’s premier cultural institution, the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery, as well as at Home Point on the banks of the kanamaluka / Tamar Estuary. ....
