The CMA has opened an investigation into Google’s proposals to remove third party cookies and other functionalities from its Chrome browser.

The investigation will assess whether the proposals could cause advertising spend to become even more concentrated on Google’s ecosystem at the expense of its competitors. It follows complaints of anticompetitive behaviour and requests for the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) to ensure that Google develops its proposals in a way that does not distort competition.
Third party cookies currently play a fundamental role online and in digital advertising. They help businesses target advertising effectively and fund free online content for consumers, such as newspapers.    The watchdog says its received concerns from UK advertisers
Google has already announced the Privacy Sandbox project supposed to deal with the issues caused by third-party cookies, and the company says its new system could go live in Chrome browsers at some point next year.
But Google eliminating third-party cookies raised some concerns in the United Kingdom, so the Competition and Markets Authority, or CMA, has confirmed it’s launching an investigation that should help determine if the search giant is abusing its dominant position on the market or not. ....
