APRIL 5 While efforts are taking place to mitigate the heavy impact of the health crisis caused by the unprecedented pandemic through the national immunisation programme and government stimulus packages, the emergence of identity politics appears to be accelerating in the country when the opposite is supposed to take place in the midst of times like this unity of Malaysians regardless of social status, race and religion.
Without the sense of unity and national spirit, it would then translate into race-based policies rather than needs-based and given the current demographics and overall socioeconomic conditions since the crisis, the latter should be given the attention. ....

Umno has had secret bank account to receive political donations since 1988


KUALA LUMPUR (Feb 11): What was supposed to be a focus on the forfeiture hearing of assets worth between RM900 million and RM1.1 billion linked to 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) has shifted to the revelation of a secret unaudited bank account held by Umno since 1988.
The ongoing case concerns Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s suit over some RM114 million in cash that was part of the loot seized from his home by police in 2018.
During proceedings last week, the prosecution led by DPP Muhammad Saifuddin Hashim Musaimi told the court that during the course of their investigations, the police discovered the existence of a secret unaudited bank account held by Umno. ....

IN his memoir, From Third World to First, The Singapore Story 1965-2000, Lee Kuan Yew said that before he retired in 1990, he wanted to clear the decks for his successor Goh Chok Tong. One sticky matter was the KTM railway line and land in Singapore.
Singapore wanted to move the joint Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) checkpoint from where the KTM railway line ended in Tanjong Pagar at the southern tip of the island to Woodlands in the north and close to the Johor-Singapore Causeway.
Singapore’s rationale for wanting to move the CIQ to Woodlands was for security reasons, it said, claiming that drugs and smuggled goods were being thrown out of KTM coaches along the route to Tanjong Pagar. But observers have long said that the reason was much bigger than that it was a question of sovereignty. ....
