New City Planner Tallman sees community input as key to prosperous, successful future


It’s been a while, but the City of Trinidad successfully secured a city planner earlier this month, and he’s already off to the races.
Sky Tallman, who came to Trinidad from Santa Fe, New Mexico, has first been tasked with developing possible solutions to the current housing bubble that has caused an “extremely hot” market according to previous reporting by The Chronicle-News. He started with the City of Trinidad on Monday, July 12.
He has already set up a roundtable discussion in late July to talk to local stakeholders and hear about the obstacles city codes create for developers seeking to create affordable and middle-income housing. ....

CCC System partners with Amazon for scholarship drawing for vaccinated Trinidad State students


The Colorado Community College System (CCCS), in partnership with Amazon, has announced the “Shot at a Scholarship” program.
The Foundation for Colorado Community Colleges will award two full-tuition scholarships of $5,000 along with five $1,000 scholarships at each of the System’s 13 colleges to students who are enrolled and attest to being fully vaccinated by mid-September.
In total, CCCS and Amazon will award 67 scholarships to community college students. This includes Trinidad State.
As colleges and universities fully reopen nationwide and students across Colorado return to CCCS campuses, higher education locations can serve as a natural access point for vaccination. Governor Jared Polis helped announce the Shot at a Scholarship program, noting: “The vast majority of Coloradans are doing their part by getting vaccinated and we’re bringing vaccines to communities, workfor the public to voice its concerns about city planning decisions. ....

But that isn’t entirely what’s been going on.
In at least one example at the commissions’ public input hearing Tuesday in Arvada, a woman who painted herself as an everyday Jane Q. Public and implied no political connection gave specific map suggestions to the commissions after being coached by a paid political consultant. After The Gazette began asking questions about the episode, it has been reported as part of a paid lobbying effort.
And while that’s not against the law, the constitutional amendments passed by voters that created the independent redistricting commissions came with requirements that paid efforts to sway the commission must be publicly reported, using the state’s lobbying disclosure mechanisms. ....
