PORTLAND, Ore., June 14, 2021 /PRNewswire/  The Harold & Arlene Schnitzer CARE Foundation today announced $550,000 in grants to 81 nonprofits and school programs throughout Oregon. These grants were made possible through CommuniCare, a year-long leadership program that gives Oregon high school students an opportunity to learn about issues affecting their communities to facilitate a deeper commitment to social activism.

SALEM, Ore. Students, their families as well as school staff and teachers have come a long way. Students who chose hybrid learning are back in the classroom and before they know it, it’ll be summer break.
Salem-Keizer Public Schools was one of the first large districts in Oregon to welcome back students for in-person, hybrid learning. Kids in grades K-12 who chose hybrid, have collectively been in the classroom two days a week for more than a month now. ....

How have families been getting help with children facing mental and emotional challenges? And what can you do to help the kids in your life who’ve struggled through this pandemic? That Expert Show host Anna Canzano spoke with Lana Shotwell of Trillium Family Services about how the organization pivoted to tele-health to serve kids and families, and the innovations it discovered along the way. Shotwell is Vice President of Community Programs for Trillium Family Service’s Portland Metro region and a Licensed Professional Counselor.
Shotwell advises that parents might want to be a little more lenient when it comes to the academic requirements this year. “It’s important that kids do their schoolwork, but homework shouldn’t be more important than making sure their mental health is okay,” she said. ....
