Seguin, TX, USA / Seguin Today May 15, 2021 | 8:38 AM (Hallettsville) – Navarro is headed to the third round of the UIL baseball playoffs for the first time since 2017 after sweeping Port Lavaca-Calhoun with an 11-0 win on Thursday and an 8-5 triumph on Friday in a best-of-three area round series at Hallettsville City Park. The Panthers rediscovered their gap-hitting power against Calhoun, scoring 19 runs on 18 hits with five doubles and a triple after plating just seven with no extra-base hits in the bi-district sweep of Fredericksburg. “A lot better approach,” Navarro head coach Kris Cavazos said. “We squared up a lot of balls, and the wind wasn’t in our favor like it has been all season long. The Panthers took a 2-0 lead in the first inning of Game 1 when Tristan Brashears singled in Sam Muniga and Jaxen Monkerud drove in Reece Rojas with a groundout. Aden Supak scored Kaden Monkerud’s courtesy runner Hunter Monroe with a two-out RBI single to make it 3-0 in the top of the fourth, and the Battlin’ Billies scored their only run on an error in the bottom half of the frame. ....

Cougarettes hand Matadors second straight district loss, Friday game at Boerne-Champion to air on KWED (Seguin) – Seguin landed on the short end of a 16-11 slug-fest against New Braunfels-Canyon on Tuesday afternoon in the fifth game of the District 26-5A softball slate. The Matadors connected for 15 hits, but the Cougarettes topped that number with 17. Canyon’s short game execution and speed on the bases kept constant pressure on the Seguin defense. The Cougarettes scored six unearned runs on three Matador errors. “You can talk about all the errors, but if they’re not putting the bat on the ball, it doesn’t happen, so you’ve got to give them credit,” Seguin head coach John Garcia said. “They put the bat on the ball. Swinging, short game, everything. They do put a lot of pressure on you, and we didn’t handle that very well at the start of the game, but we kind of came back and settled down a little bit.” ....
