The Dillingham police and fire departments continue to investigate the cause of a fire at the city landfill.
The city of Dillingham said in a news release that the landfill shop building caught fire sometime after 6 p.m. Jan. 3
The city said landfill employees arrived to work Monday, Jan. 4, to find a smokey, smoldering shop. No injuries were reported.
Dillingham city officials say an ignition from a 1989 pickup truck may have caused the fire at Dillingham s landfill shop building. The truck was used to refuel machinery at the landfill. Interim City Manager Cynthia Rogers said in an update last week that Dillingham Police and the state fire marshal have yet to determine exactly where the fire started based on the fire s burn patterns. ....

Seven people tested positive for COVID-19 in two different villages in the Dillingham area between Dec. 20-23, according to a news release from the Bristol Bay Area Health Corporation.
In one community, an individual experiencing symptoms tested positive for the disease. Two of their close contacts tested positive as well. Those cases were travel-related.
Four people in the second community tested positive. They were close contacts of one another. All households are now in quarantine.
BBAHC will receive its first batch of COVID-19 vaccines this week. It plans to distribute them to frontline healthcare workers in accordance with state guidelines. The corporation has not said whether it is administering Moderna s or Pfizer s COVID-19 vaccine. ....

More than 58 million sockeye salmon returned to Bristol Bay this summer. It s another in a series of enormous runs to the fishery. The commercial harvest was just as impressive Bristol Bay s fleet hauled in 39.5 million fish, which is the fifth-largest harvest on record.
But while the Bay s run exceeded 50 million fish for the sixth year in a row 46% above the 20-year average many other areas of the state were far below their forecast.
When you take Bristol Bay out of the picture and look at sockeye harvests in Alaska, the non-Bristol Bay sockeye harvests this year were the lowest on record since 1976, said Dan Leash, an economist with the McDowell Group. ....

Mike Minista lived in Manokotak all his life. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, and he also fished commercially for decades.
One of his long-time friends, Jerry Liboff, met Minista 50 years ago at the Ekuk Cannery. Minista was commercial fishing at the time; a storm had kept him at the cannery for several days.
I tried to stumble around with a few Yup ik words, he said. Once I started mis-saying Yup ik words, that sort of broke the ice and we became actually very good friends at the beginning.
Liboff said that during their many visits over the years, Minista would teach him Yup ik. ....
