View Comments A Dubuque man whose first conviction for murder was thrown out by Iowa appellate courts has been convicted again in the 2017 death of his girlfriend. Fontae Buelow, now 29, was arrested after Samantha Link, 21, died in March 2017 from three stab wounds. He was convicted at trial in January 2018 of second-degree murder, despite his claim that Link stabbed herself as he attempted to end their relationship, and sentenced to 50 years in prison. At Buelow s first trial, the judge refused to allow evidence related to Link s mental health, including testimony from a former boyfriend who says Link grabbed a knife at one point in an argument during their relationship. In December 2019, the Iowa Court of Appeals overturned the conviction on that basis, and the Iowa Supreme Court affirmed that ruling in December 2020. ....
Charges have been dismissed against a Dubuque man who was accused of repeatedly hitting his girlfriend in the head and holding a knife to her face in November 2019. 43 year old Johnny Webb Jr. was supposed to begin his trial this week in the Iowa District Court of Dubuque County for charges of domestic assault with a weapon and domestic assault with injury. However, charges were dismissed by the Dubuque County Attorney’s Office just before the trial was to begin. Assistant County Attorney Richard Kirkendall said the case was dismissed after two key witnesses decided they would not be able to testify. Without that testimony, he said the prosecution did not have enough admissible evidence for trial. ....
Dubuque Woman to Spend 30 Years in Prison for Sexually Exploiting Children and Possessing Child Pornography Posted on A woman who created sexually explicit images of two children was sentenced on February 12, 2021, to 30 years in federal prison Gina Christa Urbain, age 37, from Dubuque, Iowa, received the prison term after an August 18, 2020 guilty plea to sexually exploiting children and possessing child pornography. At the guilty plea, Urbain admitted that she sexually exploited two minors, a 7 year-old female and 5 year-old male, by creating visual depictions of sexually explicit material involving both children. Urbain also admitted possessing visual depictions of child pornography. Urbain was sentenced in Cedar Rapids by United States District Court Judge C.J. Williams. Urbain was sentenced to 360 months’ imprisonment. She must also serve a five-year term of supervised release after the prison term. There is no parole in the federal system. ....
