After Texas Gov. Greg Abbott issued Executive Order 36, which bans all government entities from mandating masks in their facilities, Texas State followed suit by ridding of all masking restrictions, leaving students, faculty and staff to begin an adjustment back to pre-pandemic customs.
The executive order, which was signed on May 18, prohibits government institutions from enforcing masks, planning to fine institutions up to $1,000 if they disobey the order.
Prior to eliminating its mask mandate, Texas State lifted its outdoor mask mandate after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported indoor and outdoor activities posed a minimal risk to fully vaccinated people.
During its May 5 meeting, Texas Stateâs Faculty Senate held its last monthly President s Academic Advisory Group (PAAG) of the semester and discussed budgets, considered confidentiality in hiring processes and filled internal Senate roles for the next term.
President Denise Trauth opened the meeting by addressing Faculty Senate inquiries as to whether an incentive could be set for students who get vaccinated. Trauth believes any sort of incentive results in the withholding of benefits from those not receiving a vaccination, and according to the universityâs general counsel, this action would likely contradict Gov. Greg Abbottâs executive order making vaccine passports illegal.

Texas State Faculty Senate discussed faculty and staff morale along with the complexities of its Personnel Committee during its April 21 meeting.
Staff Council Chair Noel Fuller spoke to the Faculty Senate about morale and staff concerns regarding the return to in-person classes.
Before COVID-19, Staff Council pushed for remote work to be more accessible and flexible. The eager return to full capacity in-person classes, summarized by the virtual town hall held by the university administration the day before, seemingly set back staff efforts. Senate Chair Janet Bezner agreed on behalf of the Senate to work with Staff Council to draft a document with recommendations.
