Attorney General Confirms Cannabis Use Is Not a Justice Department Enforcement Priority - Attorney General Merrick Garland confirmed in a recent House subcommittee meeting that enforcement against cannabis use in states where it has been legalized is “not a good use of our resources” or a priority for the Department of Justice. In contrast, “transnational operations of large amounts coming from Mexico or transnational operators who are coming into the United States to do the growing . . . are certainly within” the department’s “jurisdiction” and “scope of concern.” ....

After 34 years at Herbert Smith Freehills, a leading competition and economic regulation partner is joining the intellectual property and technology (IPT) group at Dentons.
Donald Robertson, who is also an adjunct professor at The University of Sydney, has been announced as global law firm Dentons’ newest partner, joining the firm’s Sydney office.
He brings with him a “strong law and economics background”, the firm said in a statement, specialising in regulatory law, competition law, and international contract and commercial law, with a special expertise in the law of money and payment systems including blockchain and cryptocurrency law, as well as experience in international investment law. ....

Global giant says deal is key landmark in strategy to become pan-African firm

Dentons has agreed to combine with Nigerian practice Adepetun Caxton-Martins Agbor & Segun (ACAS-Law) to become only the second global law firm with a presence in Africa’s largest economy.
The deal has been announced on the 30th anniversary of ACAS-Law, which is best known for its oil and gas practice but operates as a full-service firm. It has seven partners and 52 lawyers working out of offices in Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt.
Dentons said the combination would be the first of its kind Nigeria, formalising a long-standing relationship between the two firms. The only comparable deal to date was secured in 2017 by DLA Piper, which added Olajide Oyewole to its African alliance, DLA Piper Africa, which, like Dentons Group, operates as a Swiss Verein made up of indep ....

Dentons has bolstered its Latin American presence by combining with Bolivian law firm Guevara & Gutiérrez, making it the only global law firm with an office in the Andean country.
The move follows its combination earlier this month with Ecuadorian firm Paz Horowitz Abogados, taking its Latin America and Caribbean office count to more than 30 across 27 countries. Guevara & Gutiérrez has offices in the capital La Paz and the country’s largest city Santa Cruz, specialising in banking and finance, corporate law, dispute resolution and energy and natural resources. The firm has 25 lawyers in total, including nine partners. ....
