DOE awards IACMI $1.5 million grant for innovative uses of South Appalachian Coal Resources

KNOXVILLE, Tenn., May 25, 2021 /PRNewswire/ The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has tapped the Institute for Advanced Composites Manufacturing Innovation, or IACMI – The Composites Institute, to develop and deploy new technologies for manufacturing coal-derived products using coal resources near distressed South Appalachian coal communities.
The $1.5 million grant awarded to IACMI will assist in the development of technologies to extract and produce critical minerals from both coal and coal ash in the South Appalachian Basin of east Tennessee, northwest Georgia and northern Alabama. Production of critical materials essential for clean energy projects, such as electric vehicle batteries, resilient buildings and infrastructure, can create jobs in coal and power plant communities. ....

Two Midsouth universities have scheduled insect scout schools for the spring. Mississippi State University will host a comprehensive Virtual Insect Scout School that is already available online to interested viewers. The University of Tennessee will host an in-person training on scouting cotton on Friday, May 28. 
MSU Scout School 
Due to the uncertainty of being allowed to hold face-to-face meetings during the early planning sessions for their Insect Scout Schools, organizers decided to pre-record the entire scout school for General Thresholds, Cotton, Corn, Grain Sorghum, and Soybean Insect Pests. Each section will cover basic biology, thresholds, and management of key pests in the major crops grown in Mississippi.   ....

As commercialization coordinator, Jen Skjellum highlights the research and innovation taking place at UTC
Soubantika Palchoudhury had developed a new, more potent plant fertilizer and wanted to market it.
An assistant professor in the Department of Civil and Chemical Engineering at UTC, she filed a patent request, working with the University of Tennessee Research Foundation.
With patent approval likely, she wanted to establish a startup company to handle business affairs, but she wasn’t quite sure how to do it.
