The Appalachian Trail stretches over 2,200 miles from Georgia to Maine. In the Tri-Cities area, volunteers of the Tennessee Eastman Hiking and Canoeing club maintain 134 miles of trail from Spivey Gap (near Erwin) to the Tennessee/Virginia border just outside of Damascus.
Many thru-hikers, section-hikers and trail veterans consider several sites along these 134 miles as some of the most picturesque in the entire length of this famed path.
With summer rolling in, itâs time to head to the cooler temperatures of the higher elevations and experience these amazing vistas. We have multiple access spots along the trail within a short drive from the Tri-Cities, ranging from easy to difficult treks. ....

Growing up on a small farm in Southwest Virginia gave me an appreciation for nature. I stayed outside a lot, exploring the forests and the higher regions of our property on Cleveland Mountain.
Even as a young child, I can remember the feelings of peace and fascination being in the woods provided for me. So itâs probably no surprise that protecting the environment and our public spaces has become important to me as an adult.
Itâs one reason I write these articles. Itâs also a reason Iâve been blogging on our local hiking trails for almost 15 years, while taking and sharing photographs of the wonderful places Iâm fortunate enough to visit. ....

Virgil Collins Chew

Virgil Collins Chew passed away on December 19, 2020. He was born in Atlanta, Georgia to Virgil and Addie Chew. He earned a degree in Chemical Engineering from Georgia Tech and an MBA from UT. After serving two years as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Army, he worked at Eastman Chemical Company until his retirement.
Collins married Charlotte Parker in 1953 and together shared their faith, love of nature and travel, and importance of service with their children until her death in 2016.
Collins was very active with youth, teaching Sunday School at Colonial Heights Christian Church, where Collins and Charlotte were charter members. He also served as an Assistant Scoutmaster and Explorer Post Advisor with Troop 48 and led a Philmont Scout Ranch Expedition. He enjoyed six years as a substitute teacher at Dobyns Bennett and through the Eastman Education Initiatives and independently, he gave science demonstrations and travel programs in area schools, judged science fairs, was a Science ....
